This web site was created on July 4, 2000 and is operated as a project of the Jefferson Ruritan Club for the benefit of the entire community (see bottom for sponsorship & free services). Jefferson, Md. is an unincorporated town, established in 1774. Incorporated as a town in 1831-1832. Jefferson townsfolk decided they didn't need a municipal government. See the limited edition print of Jefferson, Md. by artist David Yontz.

Dominion Transmission, Inc. has proposed building a large gas line pumping station in Jefferson. As part of a larger project to improve distribution of natural gas originating in the Gulf region of the U.S. and pumped to underground storage caverns in Pennsylvania for further distribution channels that include the existing pipeline through Jefferson, the proposal may have far reaching consequences. The pumping station may also have consequences for the citizens of Jefferson. As a first step in a process to invite public comments, Dominion and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) sponsored an open house on May 7, 2008 at Valley Elementary School.
Over 200 people attended - a sizable turnout, despite the very limited public announcements (confined to within 1/2 mile of the proposed site), confusion about schedule and venue, and conflicting local events. One vocal opponent, who was trying to get the open house set to May 8 at Jefferson Ruritan Center, said, "it is as if Dominion and FERC were trying to get a low turnout to justify bypassing a public scoping meeting." David Hanobie, the FERC representative at the event, said that it is up to his boss, Mike Boyle, who was not present, to decide whether to hold a scoping meeting, a meeting to gather oral comments from citizens, but that a major criteria would be turnout at the open house.
Jennifer Booth, one of the local citizens that are organizing public input,
said "We
are looking to form a committee of core individuals. That
committee will be looking at all relevant issues as pertaining to how the site
